Doing this “local topics” comic each week never allows me to tackle any national news item, but sometimes a local story goes viral and gets national attention (actually, that’s becoming a kind of a thing here in Asheville with The Daily Show and the president and James Franco and Jennifer Lawrence running around…) and I get to inadvertently address a subject of national (or at least, national online) debate.

If you have not heard of the Brony controversy in a local school, it should be easy to Google some info. However,  here is the latest (as I type this) update on it . Rather than focus on this particular case and school, I wanted to satirize the broader phenomenon of  things that are considered appropriate for boys (and men) to enjoy.

We’ve all been made aware (if only relatively recently in the scale of history) of the limited options that girls and women have been given over the measure of human civilization, and perhaps the plight of men pales in direct comparison to such oppressive gender politics and sometimes outright second-class citizenship, but there is something to be said about the way modern women now enjoy a certain type of freedom, and a mantra of being able to do anything and be anything, but woe be unto any boy who wears the wrong color or any man who orders the wrong drink within observable vicinity of the established narrow status quo.
