ASHEVILLE – Buncombe County has passed the “window of criticality,” the time during which the most can be done to prevent an overwhelming surge of coronavirus patients, County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Fletcher Tove said during an April 9 press conference.

Tove said he and other local officials believe they “successfully hit” that window with strict social distancing and other measures that would reduce the number of peak cases. That is a four to 10 week period during which local health systems have the greatest potential for being overwhelmed.
